Development of advanced joining technologies for supermartensitic stainless steel line pipes

JOTSUP

Project timeline
Start:
February 2000
Duration:
36 months
End:
January 2003
General Information
The JOTSUP project will develop advanced welding technologies by using laser beam (LB), low vacuum electron beam (EB) and radial fricton welding techniques, improve the pipe manufacturing efficiency as well as to fully exploiting the advanced properties of the new generation supermartensitic stainless steels and new joining technologies. Furthermore, it also aims to develop strength matching welding consumables (which are not available today) for this high strength grade steels, to improve structural behaviour of the welded flow lines during the pipe laying (e.g. reeling) and service of oil and gas industry for transportation of unprocessed oil and gas in the North Sea. The benefit of the project on the environment is anticipated via a reduced use of chemical inhibitors for preventing corrosion in gas transport and increased safety against failure.
