European Project on Ocean Acidification

EPOCA

Project timeline
Start:
May 2008
Duration:
48 months
End:
April 2012
General Information
The project aims at investigating the impact of ocean acidification on marine ecosystems and its interplay with present and pre-historic oceanic carbonate chemistry. The research, jointly proposed with 28 partners, is anticipated to provide a sound basis for advising political decision makers. Research interest cover climatic, biogeochemical issues on global scale, as well as ecological aspects in coastal regions, e.g. in North Sea and Baltic Sea. The proposal is devised to establish bridges between paleo-reconstruction, large-scale biogeochemistry, and process-oriented research on organisms and habitats. The major GKSS contribution will be to mediate between experiments and large scale, biogeochemical modelling. Observations from mesocosm studies will be assimilated into ecological models that include parameterisations for pH-sensitive processes, such as calcification, carbon acquisition, and nitrogen fixation.
